The Real Reason Why Princess Diana Was Assassinated. Ex MI Agent Testifies
Director Oliver Hirschbiegel looks back on his Diana film and admits where the movie went wrong…
Director Oliver Hirschbiegel is the man behind the superb movie Downfall, and the less superb movie Diana. His new feature, 13 Minutes, is heading into cinemas very shortly, and as part of the promotion for that, he’s been chatting with The Independent as to just what went wrong with his loudly-lambasted Diana project.
Diana was, of course, based on the life of Princess Diana, with Naomi Watts in the title role. And Hirschbiegel is keenly aware that it was not a well-liked film.
“When I read the script, I knew this was a very unusual story about Diana. It was a love story and I didn’t know about the story with Hasnat [Dr Hasnat Khan]. I thought – I want to do it”, he said. “Of course, you know you are taking quite a risk – it is Diana!”, adding “I like a good challenge”.
So what went wrong?
“The basic problem with Diana was that we just focused on the love story. That was a mistake. We should have shown the bigger picture. I think I should have dared to go deeper into the character. She was way more strange and twisted than you see in the film”, he said. “She had many sides – negative, weird ways of behaving… let’s say there were more layers to her character than we were able to show. Maybe it is not possible to do that in a movie in the first place”.
He confirmed that there was never any reaction from Princess Diana’s family over the movie, and he doesn’t agree with the negative reaction the movie got. “I still like it very much”, he said, noting that the bulk of the negative press wasn’t in the end turned on him, but “they hit incredibly against the writer and they were rather unkind with Naomi often”.
13 Minutes is released in UK cinemas this Friday. Early reviews? It’s a much, much stronger movie.
