Hundreds of people waited in the rain to see Prince Charles and Princess Diana on the final public event of their royal tour — a stop at Government House in Edmonton.
The 18-day tour came to a close on July 1, Princess Diana’s 22nd birthday, as the Royal couple attended the official kick-off of the Summer Universiade.
As CBC’s Frank Dolphin reported, Diana’s red silk dress stole the show, leaving little Canadian girls in awe of the princess.
Speaking at Government House, Charles, Prince of Wales, thanks Canadians for their hospitality, and pointed out it was Diana’s first trip to the country.
“I have a feeling, of course, if my wife hadn’t married me, she wouldn’t have met nearly so many Canadians.”
Later that day, the royal couple attended the opening ceremony for the Universiade Games at Commonwealth Stadium, then returned to England.
They returned to Canada three years later, but did not visit Edmonton on that tour.
