ROYAL REVEAL Princess Diana was ‘prescribed Valium’ on honeymoon with Prince Charles and both underwent therapy, new book claims
A new book, Prince Charles: The Passions And Paradoxes Of An Improbable Life, claims to lay bare more truths behind the ill-fated royal coupling.

A Shocking new book claims that Princess Diana was prescribed Valium on her honeymoon with Prince Charles, after her mental state became increasingly unstable.

Diana, who was just 19 when she met Charles, was left tormented by the thought that her would-be Prince Charming was in love with another woman.

A new book, Prince Charles: The Passions And Paradoxes Of An Improbable Life, claims to lay bare more truths behind the ill-fated royal coupling – which sent both of them into therapy.

Diana previously admitted, on Panorama and in a book by Andrew Morton, that she had suffered with bulimia, self-mutilation, depression and acute anxiety.

Shockingly, the book reveals that some of these were even apparent on her honeymoon.

It claims, that while staying at Balmoral, Diana was so depressed that she slashed herself with shards of glass and razor blades in front of her new husband – and that she was resistant to any psychiatric treatment.

The “people’s princess” also told friends that she threw herself down a flight of stairs when pregnant with Prince William – a claim that pals have labelled as “exaggerated”.

But, according to research carried out by author Sally Bedell Smith, Diana’s mental torment began before she even married Prince Charles.

Just 24 hours before she even walked down the aisle Diana had a spell of severe vomiting and she was already plagued with suspicions over Charles’ relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles.

In an excerpt shared with The Daily Mail, Sally wrote: “Faced with what he called the ‘other side’ of her previously jolly behaviour, Charles blamed pre-wedding jitters.

“Diana, for her part, was already blaming Camilla.

“Years later, the Princess said she wept before her fiance left on a pre-arranged trip to Australia because he’d taken a call the previous night from Camilla, who had wanted to say goodbye to him.

“Unsurprisingly, Diana was prescribed Valium. She refused to take it, however, convinced in her growing paranoia that the Royal Family was trying to sedate her.”

Sally writes: “Charles was sympathetic, but he lacked the knowledge or the temperament to help a very disturbed young woman who, above all, needed consistent support and the right kind of therapy.”

And Charles seemed to grow resentful that his relationship was not working out, the book adds that Charles wrote to one of his friends: “How awful incompatibility is… How dreadfully destructive it can be for the players in this extraordinary drama.”

Meanwhile, Diana would goad Charles and the pair would find themselves in awful arguments.

Sally writes: “Diana taunted him [Charles] by saying, ‘You’ll never be King,’ and banished many of his old friends.

“Resenting anything associated with Charles’s previous life, she also insisted on getting rid of Harvey, his yellow Labrador, who was sent to live with one of the Prince’s advisers.”

Diana and Charles later divorced on August 28 1996.
