A furious Camilla slaps her stepson Prince William’s face as tensions over the future of the Monarchy reach boiling point.

This is one of the shocking scenes from a controversial new BBC drama which portrays a Royal Family riven by ambition and bitter personal rivalry.

Tory MP Andrew Bridgen last night condemned the BBC2 film, which is due to be screened on May 10.

‘It is unfortunate that the BBC would seek to promote this flight of fantasy, which many licence-fee payers will find distasteful and which I believe denigrates and undermines our Royal Family,’ he said. ‘I hope that the BBC will make clear that the production is pure fiction.’

King Charles III is based on a West End play of the same name and imagines Prince Charles’s accession to the throne. It charts the progress of the new King – played by actor Tim Pigott-Smith, who died earlier this month – as he seeks to influence government policy.

When Charles refuses to sign a bill restricting a free press, he provokes a constitutional crisis and rioting on the streets. In one scene, the increasingly delusional monarch asks for a tank to be placed outside Buckingham Palace.

Throughout the drama the King is at loggerheads with son William, who has been told by the ghost of his mother, Diana, that he will make a great monarch.

William’s wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, played by Charlotte Riley, is portrayed as a scheming Lady Macbeth figure who will stop at nothing to usurp Charles in favour of her husband. When tensions boil over Camilla, played by Margot Leicester, slaps William, played by Oliver Chris.

The drama ends with Charles’s abdication and the coronation of William, with Kate as his queen. Royal biographer Penny Junor said last night the slap ‘would not have happened in a million years’.

She added: ‘Charles will come to the throne with so much life experience.’

A BBC spokesman said: ‘The public knows the difference between fact and fiction and King Charles III is a one-off BBC2 drama of the award-winning fictional play.’
